BACKGROUND![]() A former adventurer from a now-disbanded guild called the Avengard, Vel now lives alone in a forest to live a life of solitude away from the tiresome politics of the realms around it. Her time in the Avengard had cemented her reputation as a master sorcerer, enough to have made connections with nobility and royalty alike. Vel had always loved to study. As a teenager, she was taken as a captive from a different continent after her ancestral culture was colonized, she was then adopted and raised by wizards of the magocratic city-state of Gemmelmir. She's older than most of the children who went through the pressure of the academic life of Gemmelmir, forcing her to become better just to keep up to people her age. It resulted in her natural gifts surfacing, surprising her teachers with her speed of learning thanks to her photographic memory and genius-level intellect allowing her to not only catch-up but even surpass her age group. It lead to her becoming an arrogant young woman for some time, joining adventuring guilds and tournaments to prove her strength and to continue honing it with challenging battles. She only humbled when Avengard had disbanded due to disagreements between members, leaving her without a job and purpose until she became an advisor to nobility and royals throughout the many countries of her continent. But the bickering between those in power and seeing their corruption and incompetence had drained Vel emotionally, realizing this is the Avengard all over again and remembering how her most beloved friends have turned on each other. Seeing all this conflict unfold before her eyes had made her decide to retire and wander the world on her own, with a new goal of finding out more about this conspiracy going around the noble circles in regards to Vel's ancestral culture. Her journeys had landed her back to Eordine, a far-away land in the north where her people used to reign. Now a part of the Windsor Dominion, Vel finds more information about it through her connections with the Windsor empress herself, Sigrid. In their private conversations, Sigrid divulged the truth that previous emperors of the Dominion had seen Eordine as a threat for Eordineans worshipped a god that was a rival of their own and practiced dark forms of magic that the Dominion's sorcerers deemed too dangerous to exist. Unsatisfied, Vel followed the clues that Sigrid gave her, eventually finding the forest she'll soon call home. A mountainous forest that spans miles across and is shared by many countries, rumored to be haunted. Lingering curses and demonic summons of the last Eordineans is said to haunt it. Undaunted, Vel's curiosity about her people have allowed her to brave through the darkness. Spells indeed linger in the trees, and Vel did feel she was being observed in the shadows. But much to her surprise, Vel have found her observers to be harmless creatures; strange timid beings of metal. Once they have deemed her to not be a threat, they lead and granted her access to a labyrinthian installation beneath the forest that widened Vel's understanding of the world. A network of tunnels of metal with runes and magic that eludes her understanding. The creatures cannot speak any human tongues, and could only show Vel the past through glimpses in their memory. The people of Eordine were the first contact of an advanced civilization who were teaching them "magic". But most of this civilization have fled, leaving behind the creatures (robots), and the installation in their hurry to leave the planet of Atanos. Vel had decided to stay within the forest, studying the installation in hopes of learning more about her people and these otherworldly visitors. Which, upon finding the central control room of the installation, she accidentally activates a distress signal that alerted the installation's makers - Earth. PERSONALITYWhen Vel was young and adventurous, she was known to be casually arrogant and hedonistic like many of the members of the Avengard, enjoying the finer things in life and throwing their weight around as some of the strongest adventurers in the land. But even then, Vel had a personal moral code that she never broke. Adventurers can be corrupt and abusive of their power, but Vel had sworn never to harm the innocent and reserves her power against her enemies and offered many of her funds to the needy, feeling that justifies the times she causes so much destruction against monsters. The disbanding of Avengard humbled Vel and caused her to rethink her life, maturing to a somewhat less arrogant person as an advisor to the nobility. This journey towards turning over a new leaf continued until she became completely on her own, abandoning her old ways and becomes more of a recluse. Returning to her roots as a mage dedicated to study and experimenting. Still despite her maturity, she retained her habit of making sarcastic comments and flirty jokes when talking to others as well as her love for a good challenging battle or adventure. Vel has an advanced intellect even among scholarly mages, mostly due to her inquisitiveness, boundless curiosity, and eidetic memory allowing her to retain information and learn at an accelerated rate. She's more open-minded than most people in Atanos who are bound by traditionalist thinking, allowing her to adapt to the revelation of an ancient technologically advanced underground network that exists in her world. She is very forward-thinking, always seeing a "big picture," willing to take risks, compromise her morals and dabble in shades of gray to achieve results. She's a reliable friend to those she knew in the past, retaining her bonds with them even being forced apart by the disbanding of Avengard, and showing more empathy and compassion than people who only knew her in the past would be surprised to see. She is willing to make up for her mistakes and help out in ways she could. However, she has difficulty trusting others perhaps to being badly burnt with her past comrades and becoming solitary for too long. She also tries to avoid in joining any major conflicts, turning down offers to join a faction as a hint of her remaining self-centeredness. Apart from her major virtues and flaws, Vel kept her love for wines and meats (which is often a luxury in her world). She's quite doting towards younger people or those she have romantic affections toward. Being later exposed to modern Earth culture has shown glimpses in her capacity of being silly, such as taking Dungeons and Dragons seriously and mocking the use of magic in Terran fiction. She loves robots in general, from the maintenance droids in the installation to being fascinated by androids. ABILITIES![]() Vel is regarded as a "natural" in magical arts, due to her innate talent in having a photographic memory and inquisitive nature that gave her a leg up towards others. However, she possesses the typical weaknesses of most mages in that she is not physically adept and her spells can take some casting time. Master Sorcerer: Possessing high levels of mastery in magic, Vel is among the best known adventuring mages in Atanos. She's a rare example of young sorcerers earning the title of master, but definitely not that uncommon. Despite her lack of experience she is noted to being able to cast spells that would normally take a few more years to master, a feat that's been accredited to her intellect. Experienced Adventurer: Starting from a young age, Vel had been through many difficult quests. Like almost all adventurers, she is skilled in outdoor survival and knowledgeable with the kind of monsters and threats that lurk outside the walls of every major city. Like most, she is fluent in several languages and conversational in a few more. Genius-level Intellect: Honed through her constant studying as a child, Vel's intelligence has soon expanded to other fields. Her interaction with the robots of the installation have granted her knowledge that not even the best sages of her world have access to. With the help of the robots and the instructions on their databases, Vel was able to get a grasp of the basics of Terran technology, able to figure out how to use appliances to watch movies and play video games, and drive the commuter cars inside the installation. She's started learning to tinker with electronics as well, leading her to become the new guardian of her friend Sofia Sinclair's drone, Atom |
